Application and use

The surface of HERMAtherm top M offers an excellent quality of imprint with all conventional printing methods. Basically, suitability tests of inks should be performed prior to printing. Web temperature during curing should not exceed 50 °C in order to prevent premature imaging or discolouration.

Printing speeds of up to 200 mm/s are possible in thermal direct printing.

The phenolfree HERMAtherm top M can be used wherever thermo reactive labels of smudge-proof, solvent and grease resistant papers are required, e.g. for weight labels (meat packers, supermarkets) or for price marking labels (excellent suitability for EAN and UPC-codes). By reason that intensive contact with plasticizers might affect the thermal image, for applications on soft PVC films individual tests are recommended. Applications in humid surroundings are possible.

The pulp for this paper comes from FSC® certified forest management and other controlled sources.

Adhesive 63S was specially developed to have extremely high tack on various substrates. Because of the high final adhesion 63S is very suitable for long-term identification, for labelling of difficult substrates and non-polar surfaces. This new kind of an adhesive gives on various substrates like PE, PET, aluminium, steel etc. similarly extreme high final adhesion values. Therefore it is suitable with the right face material or security die cutting as a tamper-evident-solution or as a seal for originality. Depending on the substrate the final adhesion will be reached in some cases in 24 hours. The tamper-evident-function is thus influenced by the surface (in folded boxes from the applied varnish) and by design of the substrate, by the design of the label and by the conditions in the end use. 63S has a particularly good resistant against light, heat and aging. The supercalendered glassine is perfectly suited for assignment in labelling machines equipped with optical or mechanical scanners.

Processing

Because of the high tack and increased coat weight the matrix stripping is recommended to do immediately at/after die cutting. As part of a self-adhesive compound HERMA PW (525) offers excellent die-cutting characteristics with all customary flatbed and rotary die-cutting tools.

Storage conditions

Storing at a temperature of 20 ± 5 °C, a relative humidity of 45 ± 5 % and a dark storage is recommended. Moisture, heat and direct sunlight have to be avoided.

The shelf life is two years from date of production.

Regulations concerning contact with food

For any food application the above mentioned thermal paper can be used together with a functional barrier to achieve a non-migration, the functional barriers tested for this purpose covering all the categories of foodstuffs for which the above mentioned thermal paper is likely to be used (biscuits, bakery, ice cream, confectionary, crisps & snacks, frozen & dry food, beverage powders, meat & gassing ripening cheese packaging). In any case, a direct contact is not foreseen.

The pressure-sensitive adhesive 63S can be safely used for the back coating of labels for the labelling of foodstuffs for storage at room temperature and below. It may be used in direct contact with dry and moist non-fatty foodstuffs (Declaration of no objection valid until 12.07.2025).

Furthermore the self-adhesive labels with the adhesive 63S can be used for labelling of blood bags (Expert's Opinion from July 12, 2021).

The paper complies with recommendation BfR XXXVI.
